Components and Functions

Engine Components and Function

Complete the following grid. Please elaborate on the function

Component

Function

Spark plug,

ignites the fuel air mixture in the cylinder

Inlet Valve

lets the fuel air mixture int the combustion chamber

 exhaust valves

opens at the correct time to allow the exhaust gasses out

piston

transfers the force from the power stroke to the crankshaft

conrod

connects the piston to the connecting rod

flywheel

the flywheel links the crankshaft to the transmission through the clutch. The outer edge of the flywheel is called the ring gear. theelectric starter pinion engages on thisgear to rotate the engine for starting.

 piston rings

forms a gas tight in the cylinder

oil control ring

Prevents oil working up into the combustion chambers

crankshaft

the crankshaft rotates in the main bearings in the crankcase.

Connecting rods are attached to offset areas called throws where the reciprocating motion of the piston is changed into rotary motion.

cambelt or cam chain

physical link between crankshaft and camshaft

camshaft

opens and closes the valves through the rocker arm

sump

the is a sump a reservoir, or storage container, for the engine lubricating oil, and a collector for oil returning from the engine lubricating system.

oil filter

removes larger particles of carbon from the lubrication system

petrol fuel injector

Injectors are solenoid-operated valves which deliver fuel in the form of an atomised spray, into the intake manifold, or the intake ports.

ignition coil

The ignition coil is a step-up transformer, which raises the nominal battery voltage of 12 volts up to the many thousands of volts necessary to provide a spark across the spark plug electrodes

 water pump

circulates coolant around the engine

cylinder liner

Cast iron liners are usually used in the cylinders of aluminium blocks, and sometimes in cast-iron blocks. Some sleeves are cast into the block. Grooves on the outside form a key that stops any movement in the cylinder. They also increase surface area to assist heat transfer from the sleeve to the block.
